Ethiopia Amhara Rural Power Grid Upgrade Project
Ethiopia Amhara Rural Power Grid Upgrade Project
As Ethiopia continues to promote rural electrification, several towns and villages in the Amhara Region needed to upgrade their existing distribution networks. A local power contractor launched a rural grid improvement project to expand electricity coverage, improve supply stability and support long-term regional development. DHDL supplied 160 distribution transformers for this project, with a total capacity of about 58MVA.

Project Background
Ethiopia has been continuously promoting rural electrification in recent years. In the Amhara Region, the existing distribution networks in multiple towns and villages could no longer fully meet local power supply needs.
To improve power access and enhance the stability of rural electricity supply, a local power contractor started a distribution network upgrade project covering 32 townships and more than 80 villages.
The project included the construction and renovation of 15kV and 33kV distribution lines, with a total length of more than 400 kilometers.

Customer Challenges
High Reliability Requirement
For data centers, even a brief power interruption may cause service disruption and business loss. The power distribution system needed to support continuous 24/7 operation.
Low-temperature Environment
Harbin’s winter temperature can approach −30°C. The equipment had to meet stable operation requirements under severe cold conditions.
Tight Delivery Schedule
The customer required equipment delivery within a short project cycle to ensure the Phase I computing center expansion could be energized on schedule.
Why the Customer Chose DHDL
The customer focused mainly on product reliability, batch delivery capability and export project experience. Since the project required a large quantity of distribution transformers, the supplier needed to complete production planning, quality control and shipment coordination in batches.
DHDL was able to complete the production plan for all 160 units and provide export packaging and shipment support. This made DHDL the final supplier for the project.
DHDL Solution
To handle transportation challenges in mountainous and remote areas, DHDL optimized the packaging structure and used reinforced wooden cases to improve protection during long-distance transport and site handling.
To improve equipment adaptability under local grid voltage fluctuations, DHDL optimized the winding design and strengthened the transformer structure to support stable operation in rural distribution networks.
Delivery Timeline
The project was delivered in three batches. The first batch of 60 units was completed in 35 days. The second batch of 50 units was completed in 52 days. The third batch of 50 units was completed in 65 days.
All equipment was delivered according to the project schedule, helping the customer keep the rural distribution network upgrade plan on track.
Customer Feedback
After the project was energized, stable power supply was achieved in multiple towns and villages. The transformers operated well, and the equipment failure rate remained low. The customer recognized DHDL’s product reliability and batch delivery performance.
Follow-up Cooperation
After the completion of this project, the customer continued cooperation with DHDL in the following year. The customer purchased another 20 units of S-630/33 transformers and 15 units of S-1000/15 transformers for new grid construction projects.
This follow-up order further strengthened DHDL’s cooperation with the customer in Ethiopia’s rural power grid and electrification projects.
